Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Kolkata witnessed a series of fire incidents on Sunday, leaving the city shaken. The latest in the chain occurred late at night in the Bijoygarh area, where a massive fire broke out in a factory next to a sweet shop near Bharati Club. The blaze was first reported around 10 PM, and three fire engines rushed to the scene to douse the flames. As of now, the fire has not been brought under control, and firefighters are battling to contain it.
This incident capped a tragic day for the city, which saw multiple fires erupt across different locations. Early in the morning, a fire broke out in the Ultadanga area, devastating a slum cluster near the railway lines. Over 10-12 houses were reduced to ashes, prompting panic and a swift evacuation by firefighters. Six fire engines worked tirelessly to bring the blaze under control.
Later in the day, another fire was reported at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. Smoke and flames were seen emanating from the bathroom in the cardiology department on the second floor of the main building.
Quick action by hospital staff and the arrival of two fire engines ensured the fire was contained before it could spread. The cause is believed to be a pile of old clothes that ignited inside the bathroom. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. In the Garia area, a few shops were gutted in late-night fire as well.
